Individualism // Community

Week 5 - Individualism // Community

 Romans 12:3-5

Individualism is the social, political, and philosophical concept that emphasizes the importance of the individual, their autonomy, and their rights over the collective or group. The Christian counter to this concept is biblical community, which states that we are designed to live in the context of meaningful relationships. The end goal is not to focus on self but to die to self and live for the benefit of others. Our culture calls us to think through the lens of individualism, but Christ welcomes us to see the world as he designed, which is through the lens of community.

Romans 12:3-5 - For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you. For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.
