Pluralism // Exclusivity of Christ
Week 2 - Pluralism // Exclusivity of Christ
Passage: Isaiah 44:6-8, Acts 4:12, John 14:6-7
John 14:6-7 - Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him."
Pluralism through a theological lens is the belief that there are multiple ways to God, sources of truth, and that all are equally valid. Pluralism emphasizes tolerance and naturally rejects the belief that there is one source of truth or one true God. This worldview stands in opposition to the Christian belief in the exclusivity of Christ. The first two of the ten commandments affirm that our God is the only God, and to elevate any idol above him is improper, wrong, and sinful.
Read Isaiah 44:6-23. Even if we do not make physical idols today, we often create other idols in our life. Those idols are anything that we turn to in order to guide our life, decisions, actions, or thoughts rather than Jesus.
1. What relationships, activities, or awards can quickly become idols in your life?
2. What is one of the more deep-rooted idols in your life? Why is tempting to let it direct your life rather than God?
3. Acts 4:12 is very clear where salvation is found. What other Bible verses proclaim the exclusivity of Christ.
4. John 14:6 says that Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. What does it mean for Jesus to be these three things to you? What idols have crept in and replaced Jesus in these areas?
