An Authentic Heart

Matthew 6:1-4, An Authentic Heart

Icebreaker:

Growing up, how was the topic of religion handled in your home?

• Was it considered a private matter or discussed openly?

• How about now—do your friends and family talk about spiritual things, or are those topics considered private?

Read Aloud:

Have someone read Matthew 6:1–4 aloud to the group.

1. The Warning in Verse 1

“Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them…”

• What is Jesus warning us about here?

• Why do you think this warning is necessary—even for us today?

2. The Word “Hypocrite” (v.2)

• When you hear the word hypocrite, what comes to mind?

• Have you ever been accused of hypocrisy?

• Why are we all susceptible to hypocrisy, especially in our spiritual lives?

3. Left Hand, Right Hand (v.3)

“Do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing…”

• What does this phrase mean in practical terms?

• How can we live this out in our day-to-day generosity or acts of service?

4. Rewards from God (vv.1, 2, 4)

• Jesus mentions rewards three times. What kinds of rewards do you think He’s talking about?

• Is it wrong for Christians to be motivated by rewards? Why or why not?

Application & Prayer Time:

This group is a safe place to “take off the mask.” Consider breaking into men’s and women’s groups for a time of honest reflection and prayer.

• In what areas of life do you struggle with being authentic?

• Where do you feel like a “hypocrite” sometimes?

• Pray for one another—to live authentic, Christ-centered lives empowered by the Holy Spirit.
