Read Ruth 1:1-5 aloud.
What does verse 1 evoke when it says "in the days when the judges ruled?" What do you know about the days of the Judges? Review Judges 2:16-23 for a summary of this period in Israel's history.
How would you characterize these opening five verses? What hardships are facing Naomi, Orpah, and Ruth? How does this set the tone for the book?
Read Ruth 1:6-22 aloud. Consider having each person read two verses at a time and go around the room.
Given all these three women face in this passage, why do you think Naomi urges her daughters-in-law to return to their families of origin? What makes this a difficult decision for Orpah and Ruth? Why do you think Orpah chooses to return home, while Ruth decides to remain with Naomi?
What are some challenges that await Ruth when she gets to Bethlehem? How would you describe Naomi's statements in Ruth 1:20-21? Do you think there is a seed of faith in the midst of her despair? Why or why not?
Are there elements in the story of Ruth 1 to which you can relate? Have you ever felt like Naomi (empty and alone), Orpah (afraid to go on), or Ruth (at the end of your rope but determined to see it through)? If you are in a difficult season right now, how can your group pray and support you? How can your group be a blessing to others around you who are going through a difficult time?
